According to a recent survey conducted for Petsmart.com, 73.7% of single women over 50 include a photo of their dog in their online dating profile.

Actually, this isn’t true. There was no such survey. I made it up.

However, I have looked at thousands of women’s dating profiles, and I can assure your that the overwhelming majority include dog photos.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that. People (both men and women) love their pets (dogs, cats, etc.) And if your dating profile is a true reflection of yourself, it makes sense for it to include what you care about.

I can understand why women love their dogs. Dogs are loyal, happy, friendly, affectionate, cuddly and a dependable source of unconditional love. They possess all the admirable qualities that women seek in a partner. And if women can’t find these qualities in a man, well, at least they have their dog. Or dogs.

But here’s the problem: some women go overboard with their dog photos.

For instance, some women make their primary profile photo a picture of their dog. And not a photo of them with their dog — just a photo of their dog. Or they post more photos of their dog — or dogs — than they post of themselves. One woman went so far as to choose this for her username: “Sleeps With Dogs.”

Wow.

Maybe there are men who dream of bedding down in a kennel, but most men are not seeking out “Eau de Canine” for their nighttime activities.

Granted, each woman believes her dog is the best dog in the world, and any man would be lucky to have their dog in his life. But here’s the reality: if a man really wants a dog, he can go to the local shelter or contact a breeder and get one. He doesn’t need to date someone with a dog to have one in his life.

So gals, one photo of you with your dog is fine. But allowing dogs to dominate your profile sends the wrong message.

Remember, your profile photos should be about you — not your pets, professions and favorite places. If your world revolves around your dog, is there room for anyone else?

Because who can compete with a dog?
